Press Release: GWA Hygiene acquires Hypros to establish a leading IoT and AI platform in the healthcare sector

Stralsund/Lübeck, April 5, 2024 – HealthTech company GWA Hygiene GmbH has acquired Hypros GmbH & Co. KG, an IT company specializing in real-time localization and sensor data for process optimization, to jointly drive digitalization in the healthcare sector. The new partnership will establish a leading IoT and AI platform for the healthcare sector, offering innovative solutions to optimize processes, reduce staff workload and improve patient safety.

GWA Hygiene GmbH, based in Stralsund, Germany, offers patented IoT solutions for the healthcare sector, including a technology-assisted hand hygiene monitoring system that helps reduce the spread of germs in hospitals. The system, marketed under the name NosoEx®, has already been installed in numerous hospitals in 17 countries. The company is backed by prominent investors. In addition to the medical and safety technology manufacturer Dräger, MIG Capital and High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) have invested several million euros to date.

Hypros GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in Lübeck, Germany, specializes in the precise positioning of devices in real time (RTLS) and offers a scalable IoT platform for the healthcare sector. This platform can be used to optimize internal processes in hospitals. Hypros is the market leader in asset tracking in German healthcare facilities, managing more than 30,000 assets over an area of more than 1.8 million square meters.

The acquisition will further advance the digitalization in healthcare by creating a common infrastructure, linking applications and integrating artificial intelligence (AI). The focus is on a combined portfolio with solutions such as asset tracking, medication refrigerator temperature monitoring, bed management, hand hygiene monitoring, contactless patient monitoring and alarm management.

The decision to acquire the company is based on many years of successful cooperation and joint innovation projects. The companies got to know each other during the blood culture tracking and indoor navigation projects at the University Medical Center Greifswald. The proven cooperation has revealed technical, professional and human synergies that are now to be intensified.

Tobias Gebhardt, CEO of GWA Hygiene GmbH, emphasizes:

“Due to the increasing shortage of skilled workers and demographic change, it will no longer be possible to maintain the level of care that patients deserve. Solutions are needed to make the work of existing hospital staff easier. Having started in hygiene, this is a great addition to our portfolio of patient safety solutions. We are confident that this acquisition will strengthen our position in the market and further expand our ability to deliver innovative solutions to the healthcare sector.”

Max Golubew, CEO of Hypros, adds:

“The acquisition by GWA allows us to better serve the increasing market demand without additional growth investments and to combine our software expertise with GWA’s hardware expertise. Together we will create a unique IoT platform for the healthcare sector.“

The brand “Hypros – Innovation in Healthcare” will be the new flagship brand of the combined company and will further establish itself as a strong brand and partner in the field of digitalization in the healthcare sector.

As Chief Information Officer (CIO), Max Golubew will join the management team of the combined company and lead the technology division together with Marcel Walz, Chief Technology Officer (CTO). All Hypros employees will remain with the company.

In addition to the newly formed team, the acquisition will also expand and strengthen the partner network. In addition to GWA Hygiene’s existing partnerships with B. Braun, HARTMANN and Google, Hypros is also entering into partnerships with system houses such as AirITSystems.

About GWA Hygiene GmbH: Founded in 2015, GWA Hygiene GmbH employs over 30 people and is a leading provider of patient safety solutions, including practical IoT solutions.

Up to 90% of germs are transmitted by hands. However, only every second hand is actually disinfected, putting patients at risk. In order to implement specific preventive measures, data must be used to identify areas for improvement. The hand hygiene monitoring system NosoEx®️ from GWA Hygiene provides data on disinfection performance. With this system, all hand disinfections can be automatically recorded and differentiated according to occupational groups.

A new addition to the portfolio is a solution for contactless patient monitoring “Made in Germany”. With this solution, it is possible to record the entry and exit of patients and to check whether hand disinfection has been carried out beforehand. Other use cases for this IoT solution are the detection of patient falls, the identification of risk factors for delirium and other spatial environmental factors. This system paves the way for the patient room of the future.

About Hypros GmbH & Co. KG: Hypros GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2016, employs more than 10 people and has since established itself as an expert in asset tracking and customization of software IoT systems in the healthcare sector.

In an environment where the availability and condition of medical equipment is critical to the smooth running of hospital operations, Hypros provides solutions that ensure the right equipment is in the right place at the right time. Through its innovative Real-Time Location Technologies (RTLS), it helps to find patients, beds and other medical equipment faster.

The lack of coordination and analysis of processes can lead to unsafe and inefficient patient care. This is where Hypros comes in, optimizing internal processes through the precise positioning of equipment. At the heart of its solutions is the ability to record and document various sensor data such as temperature, humidity and button pressure in parallel. This not only improves individual processes, but also allows potential problems to be identified and corrected early on.

The flexibility and adaptability of Hypro’s solutions are key features that make it possible to respond to the individual requirements of different use cases in the healthcare sector. Thanks to a modular system configuration, they offer scalable solutions that not only meet today’s needs, but can also accommodate and support future developments.
